SKOPJE, September 4, 2025 – In the urban rhythm of daily life, we are often unaware of how hate speech disrupts our shared space—not only in communication but also in the social and emotional life of the community. The new artistic intervention in a public space addresses this very issue, posing the question: How far are we willing to let hate speech take us—and are we ready to put a stop to it?

This time, the most recognizable traffic sign, STOP, was used as the basis for the action. The sign calls for caution and requires you to come to a full stop. More than 50 such signs were placed in Skopje, transformed with a new message: “Stop Hate Speech.” The idea comes from the powerful visual symbolism of the sign, which daily forces us to stop and be mindful. In the same way, this action encourages citizens to “stop,” read the message, and think about the consequences of spreading hatred.

Hate speech in North Macedonia is taking on increasingly alarming proportions. It is not just a verbal statement; it creates real obstacles to normal communication, incites divisions, conflicts, and discrimination, and leaves deep scars on individuals and society.
With this action, we want to remind everyone that just as there are clear rules in traffic to maintain our safety, we must also establish clear social rules to protect the public sphere from hatred.

The action is part of a broader concept of creative activism, which uses art not only as an expression but also as a tool for social change. Instead of abstract appeals, the intervention creates a visual and communicative experience that transforms an ordinary public space into a place of confrontation and dialogue. Through this simple but powerful message, we call on citizens, institutions, and the community as a whole: it is time to say STOP to hate speech!
This initiative was prepared by the Contemporary Art Center – Skopje, as part of the Innovative Media’s “Diversity Network 2.0 – New Agenda” project.
