“Poisonous Arrows” Installation: A Powerful Visual Statement Against Hate Speech

SKOPJE, June 23, 2025 – An impactful new art installation titled “Poisonous Arrows” has been unveiled in Skopje, aiming to raise public awareness about the damaging effects of hate speech. This action organised by the Association for the Advancement of Journalistic Practices “Innovative Media – Skopje”, featuring a strong visual message presented in a simple and easily understandable language, serves as a powerful reminder that words can be dangerous.

Inspired by the symbolism of poisonous arrows, the installation graphically portrays hate speech as an invisible yet potent weapon that inflicts harm. At the core of the installation is a human face with a wide-open mouth, from which “poisonous” arrows emerge. This serves as a symbolic representation of the words used by perpetrators of hate speech to insult, hurt, or demean others.

Measuring 1.4 x 1.2 meters and crafted from recycled metal materials including tin, profiles, and reinforcements, this sculptural composition commands attention with its striking form and profound symbolism. A clear message at its base reads: “Hate Speech Hurts”. This serves as a call to action for everyone to consider the consequences of their words, especially in an era where communication increasingly occurs in the digital sphere, and hate speech is becoming a growing societal problem.

This artistic intervention seeks to elevate public consciousness regarding the detrimental impacts of hate speech and to foster social responsibility, empathy, and respect for others.

The artwork is publicly displayed in a central Skopje location, specifically on the small square near KIM in Porta Bunjakovec, at the intersection of Leninova (Aminta III) Street and Partizanski Odredi Boulevard.

This initiative was prepared by the Contemporary Art Center – Skopje, as part of the “Diversity Network 2.0 – New Agenda” project.
