“Press” a Different Key: Giant Keyboard Installation in Skopje Challenges Online Hate Speech

SKOPJE – A massive sculptural keyboard has appeared today at the prominent “KIM” intersection on Partizanski Odredi Boulevard, serving as a bold artistic intervention against the rising tide of hate speech.

The installation, inspired by one of the most universal symbols of the digital age, aims to pull virtual communication out of the shadows and into the physical world. By transforming the keyboard into a large-scale public object, the artists behind the project seek to move the conversation about online behavior from the glowing screens of smartphones into the heart of the city’s public space.

From Virtual Silence to Public Dialogue

Positioned in one of Skopje’s busiest urban areas, the sculpture confronts passersby with the reality of digital responsibility. In the online sphere, hate speech is frequently ignored, tolerated, or even normalized due to the perceived anonymity of the screen. This installation aims to:

  • Trigger Reflection: Prompting citizens to think twice before they “type.”
  • Encourage Awareness: Challenging the passive acceptance of toxic online environments.
  • Initiate Dialogue: Starting a public conversation about the real-world consequences of digital vitriol.

A Symbolic Choice

The giant keyboard symbolically invites pedestrians to “press” a different choice—one rooted in respect, empathy, and personal responsibility. By interacting directly with the piece, citizens are encouraged to recognize their own power and agency in shaping the way we communicate in the 21st century.

The action is part of a broader series of urban installations designed to use public art as a catalyst for social change. It raises several pointed questions for the modern user:

  • How well can we actually identify hate speech when we see it?
  • Do we take responsibility and react, or do we remain passive bystanders?
  • When we encounter toxic content, do we report it or simply look the other way?

The installation measures 2 × 2 meters and is constructed from wood and metal elements. This action was prepared by the Center for Contemporary Arts Skopje as part of the project Reporting Diversity Network 2.0 – The New Agenda.” The project is implemented by the Association for the Advancement of Journalistic Practices “Innovative Media Skopje”.
